Artist's Statement

The art I create consists mostly of drawings and paintings.  When I draw, I like to use a black ink pen that can move freely across the pages of my sketch book.  My focus can turn outward to what is before me, and that is what my pen will record, or I can turn inward and draw on personal experiences that unfold like a dream.  For the most part however, both the outside world and my imagination converge in a playful interaction of patterns and images.

My paintings are similar in style, using the same method as described above, but with the added dynamic of colour and texture.

The mediums I prefer are acrylic and oil with the occasional mix of graphite or pastel.  The supports I prefer are canvas, masonite and archival paper.  Tools of application can vary from brushes and knives to squirt bottles and fingers, each rendering qualities that range from turpentine thin to opaque globs of paint.

The colours I choose are determined by the patterns and images that emerge from the work.  Most of my art is not preconceived, but rather evolves through the process of improvisation.  By this approach, I strive to express myself and the unconscious mind.
